(3 tablespoons of coffee to every 1 cup of water)
Is Chemex the best way to brew coffee?
Chemex is suited for pour over or drip coffee lovers.
It’s harder to master the art for this style, but the returns are a fine tasting, clean, smooth filter coffee.
Can I use regular filters with Chemex?
Chemex filters are specifically designed to perform with the brewer because of the special shape. I would only use filters such as the coffee Kone filters from Able brewing or a reusable organic cotton filter made from Coffeesock.
Can you use Ground Coffee in a Chemex?
Of course! Just weigh your coffee and grind to a coarseness resembling sea salt.
Unfold your filter and place it in your brewer.
Make sure the triple-fold portion is facing the pour spout and lays across without obstructing it.
Pour ground coffee into the filter and give it a gentle shake about.
How To Use A Chemex – Step by Step
Step 1
Select your favorite quality whole bean coffee you want to use and grind it to a medium coarse ground.
Always use a burr grinder because it delivers a consistent particle size. This allows for a better extraction.
Step 2
Open a Chemex Coffee Filter of your choice into a cone shape. Now place it into the top of the brewer.
The think (three-layer) portion should cover the pouring
spout depending on the filter you use.
Make sure you dampen the filter with warm water to rinse and preheat the chem brewer.
Now drain filter completely, pour it out of the brewer.
Keep the filter sealed against the coffeemaker wall.
Step 3
Scoup one rounded tablespoon of ground coffee for every 5 oz. cup into the filter cone. Use more if you like it strong.
This brewing process eliminates the bitterness.
Tip: On all brewers except the pint size model, the “button” indicates the carage is half filled and the bottom of the
wooden collar/spout indicates it’s full. On the pint size brewer, the button is the full marker.
Step 4
Once water has boiled, remove it from the heat and allow it to stop boiling.
Pour a small amount of water over the coffee grounds to wet them, and wait for about 30 seconds for them to “bloom”.
This will release the deliscious coffee elements from the grounds.
Perfect brewing temperature is around 93 Degrees Celsius or 200°F.
Step 5
After the grounds bloom, slowly pour the brewing water over the grounds while keeping the water level well below the top of the flask.
Step 6
Slowly pour the remaining water over the grounds, use a circular motion and as you pour ensure coffee grounds are evenly soaked.
Step 7
Once you reach the desired amount of coffee required, lift the filter with used grounds out of the brewer and dispose.
Step 8
Pour your fresh coffee into your mug and get lost in the
flavour.
Keeping the Chemex Warm
Want to keep your coffee warm when using the chemex brewer? If so then you may place the flask directly on a glass stove top (low heat) or a gas flame (at low heat).
If you use an electric coil stove top, you must utilise a Chemex stainless steel wire grid to avoid breakages.

The size Chemex to get is a matter of personal choice.
Most common choice for Chemex enthusiasts is either the 6-cup or 8-cup model.
This range can cater for making coffee for a group of friends and small enough to make coffee for one or two people.
